The morning session will provide an introduction to the legislation covering both the Freedom of Information Act and the Environmental Information Regulations. The afternoon session will be more advanced and will examine some of the key decisions made under the two regimes and explain how they can help you obtain information. We think most people will benefit from attending the whole day, but you're welcome to come to just the morning or afternoon if you wish.

The course deals only with recent decisions and does not repeat material covered in previous courses. It is aimed at experienced FOI practitioners and others with a good working knowledge of the FOI Act. Its exact content is dependent on the decisions that have been issued during the period, but typically covers issues such as: "fair" and "unfair" disclosures of personal data; the FOI/EIR borderline; the commercial interests and confidentiality exemptions; where the public interest line is being drawn; applying the cost limit, vexatious requests and advice and assistance.
The course will be presented by Maurice Frankel, the Campaign's director, who has worked in the field for 27 years.

Training For A 1700 Mile Solo Expedition
Last week I mentioned that British adventurer Ripley Davenport was getting ready for his Mongolia 2010 Expedition, in which he'll go solo and unsupported across 1700 miles of harsh terrain. When I posted that story, Ripley was being featured on Adventure World Magazine, and now he's back with the first of an ongoing feature about his training methods for the journey.
In this story, the intrepid explorer says that his physical training for next year's expedition actually began nearly a year ago in October of 2008. His approach to the training is to get outside, work hard in the elements and the natural conditions. As Ripley puts it, working out in a gym isn't very helpful when the conditions he'll be dealing with won't be comfortable and easy.
He also discusses the areas he is focusing his training on, such as muscular composition and flexibility. These are obviously important factors for anyone who will be challenging themselves physically. But Ripley also lists mental training as part of his preparation, and personally I think that is the area that separates those who are successful and those who are not.
This looks like it'll be a great ongoing series, and should prove to be very insightful. ASW has a winner here, and I think we'll all enjoy it.

Scottish Information Commissioner Decisions courses
The Campaign for Freedom of Information in Scotland is running two half-day training courses in Glasgow on 14 September 2009 and Aberdeen on 15 September 2009.
The courses, which are aimed at those with a good working knowledge of the legislation, will highlight key developments in the way the main exemptions, the public interest test and the legislation's procedural requirements are being interpreted. The courses will be presented by the Campaign's director, Maurice Frankel.
The courses will focus on the decisions issued by the Scottish Information Commissioner and Court of Session, but will also cover decisions issued by the UK Commissioner and Tribunal that have implications for Scottish public authorities.
