La Boule Dawgs beat French Consulate

Athens, Georgia - report from Paul Kos:

Yesterday, October 18, we had a great tournament in Athens, GA, between teams hosted by the French Consulate of Atlanta with Etienne Abobi and Connie Lewis as their organizers and our La Boule Dawgs of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. The French brought French cuisine and the Athenians had Southern style cooking. We played at our off campus court at 585 Barber Street in Athens. 48 players competed in triplette. La Boule Dawgs came in first with the French in second place.

The two final teams:

There will be 2 "Boule Dawgs" teams in Amelia Island next month!

Atlanta Falcons trying out pétanque

A delegation of the Falcons visited Park Springs community in Stone Mountain last week.
And ended up on the beautiful pétanque court for a lesson by the residents.

I recognize my friend Stephanie - the charming 92-year old lady who kicked my butt in May - explaining the game to Thomas DeCoud!

Indoor petanque in Atlanta

On Friday the French American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta held their Annual gala called Passport To France. Hundreds of guests came for top class food, wine and an auction with wonderful prizes.

Since this year the highlight was on the French Riviera, they turned part of the ballroom into a casino. And with the assistance of our friends at Ricard and lively volunteers of Atlanta Accueil, we turned one corner into a boulodrome + pastis bar during the aperitif. Oriental carpet, marble and steel balls don't mix, so we used indoor boules ('petanque molle').

It was an unusual sight, thus even more fun!

I met several people who are keen to get a regular group together in Atlanta. Anyone else interested, email me and we'll put you on the map.

Petanque in Georgia

Lamar Dodd School of Art in Athens, GA - east of Atlanta - has become a petanque "hotbed", under the guidance of this year's Professorial Chair Paul Kos.

Below you see the school's team "La Boule Dawgs", in a rural and a more urban environment. Nice graffiti!

And the school is preparing a dedicated terrain next to the new building as we speak.

This past weekend the team went to visit the folks at Park Springs Community in Stone Mountain. I don't know the end result but a wonderful time was had by all. How often do you see a bunch of college students challenge a 62+ retirement community? Only in petanque.

Kudos to Paul, Andy and all the competitors.
By the way, apparently the terrain at Park Springs is tops.

Anyone in Atlanta, GA?

A message from Donna, in the Grant Park area:

Just returned from Club Med in Punta Cana Dominican Republic -- and in addition to a terrible sunburn --- I returned home with a new found love for Petanque.
If there's not a club in Atlanta, I'd love to (at least try) to get one started.
