Obama Supports McCain On Climate Change

Senator Barack Obama gave an enthusiastic
speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate in support of the McCain/Lieberman Climate
Stewardship & Innovation Act of 2005. Although the bill lost 38-60, Senator Obama is demonstrating astute problem solving skills with respect to environmental and energy policies. We hope to see more bipartisan cooperation between Senators McCain and Obama. Do you think Senator Obama is right about climate change?

Green Scandal on Climate Change?

Inside the beltway pundits and greens are talking about how ex-ExxonMobil lobbyist Phillip Cooney has 'edited' climate change documents to downplay the significance of global climate change. And after revising said documents he returned to ExxonMobil. What else is new? Industry lobbyists and environmental lobbyists come and go in every administration. Mr. Cooney's influence will have little effect on the G-8 global warming proposal. The big influence in the U.S. occurred in 1997 when the U.S. Senate voted 97-0 to not even consider the Kyoto Protocol. The Clinton/Gore administration never even sent a Kyoto Protocol treaty to the Senate to ratify. Get a clue people. Cooney came to the White House Council on Environmental Quality and now he is gone. John McCain has a serious climate change bill pending in the U.S. Senate (It failed 38-60). Although the Bush Administration is pursuing a voluntary program, the U.S. will ultimately adopt a mandatory carbon trading program.

Left Coast Global Warming Smog

When The Terminator was announcing his global warming initiative at the June 05 United Nations World Environment Day Conference in San Francisco, EPA was rejecting a petition from California (N.Y. & Conn) to waive the oxygen content requirement for reformulated gasoline (RFG). RFG is a cleaner-burning gasoline required by the Clean Air Act to be used in certain metropolitan areas of the United States with the worst ozone air pollution. The Clean Air Act also requires RFG to contain 2 percent oxygen by weight.

EPA agreed with California's claim that an oxygen content waiver would lead to a decrease in certain vehicle emissions that contribute to the formation of smog and particulate matter, EPA concluded that the overall impact on emissions is slight. The agency found that total volatile organic compound (VOC) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are likely to decrease with a waiver while carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are likely to increase. EPA's denial of California's petition is based on the lack of evidence proving that the emission impacts of a waiver would lead to any earlier attainment of the air quality standards for smog or particulate matter than would occur without a waiver. The administration supports efforts by Congress to remove the oxygen requirement from the RFG program and replace it with a flexible national renewable fuels program. For more information on this action and the national RFG program, visit: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/rfg_regs.htm#waiver Does this make sense to you?
