Women We Love: Debra Zimmerman

Who She Is: Debra Zimmerman is the Executive Director of the arts nonprofit Women Make Movies, a nonprofit New York-based film organization that supports women filmmakers. As executive director she’s helped grow Women Make Movies into a thriving arts organization that provide funding and support for hundreds of female artists each year.

Why We Love Her: Debra has been with Women Make Movies since 1983, and under her tenure she’s grown it into a the largest distributor of films by and about women in the world. Debra and Women Make Movies provide a valuable resource to an often marginalized group of filmmakers – and with great success. Films supported by WMM have won prizes at the last three Sundance Film Festivals, and the organization champions the work of emerging artists and established auteurs, such as Sally Potter, Jane Campion, Gurindha Chadha, and Julie Dash.

Quote: “Thirty years after the start of Women Make Movies, I can’t believe how far we’ve come. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next thirty years… The future of Women Make Movies rest not only in our continued advocacy of women filmmakers and our attentiveness to social issues, but also in the incorporation and development of new technology and the expansion of our distribution and promotion efforts through the internet.”
