Transactions of the Baptist Historical Society now online

I was asked last year by Professor John Briggs, Chairman of the Baptist Historical Society, if I could assist them by digitising and hosting the Transactions of the Baptist Historical Society (1908-1921) and the Baptist Quarterly (1922-present). I quickly learned - through my contacts at the Baptist training colleges - that the Transactions represent a unique historical record valuable not just to Baptists, but to church historians, theologians and missiologists across the denominations. These old volumes are currently on restricted access in those few colleges that have paper copies.

The Baptist Quarterly will take me most of this year to complete, but the Transactions of the Baptist Historical Society are now available on-line. To further assist colleges I have provided a link at the top of the page to a compressed archive that contains all the PDF files and a separate table of contents (total file size around 65MB). These can be placed on College servers at no charge as the entire collection is now Public Domain.

New Title: Paul as Missionary by Trevor Burke & Brian Rosner

Paul as Missionary
The following book is due to be published shortly:

Trevor J. Burke & Brian S. Rosner, eds., Paul as Missionary: Identity, Activity, Theology, and Practice. Edinburgh: T & T Clark International, 2011. Hbk. ISBN: 9780567604750. pp.420.

Description
Paul as Missionary: Identity, Activity, Theology and Practice takes the view that before anything else Paul must first and foremost be identified as a ‘missionary’. Using the entire Pauline corpus the contributors to this volume assess what Paul’s correspondence can tell us about how he perceived his role and identity. The work comprises four parts: in section one, Paul’s identity as priest, eschatological herald, and missionary-pastor are explored while in part two topics such as the apostle’s activity among pagans, his suffering, and Paul’s ‘missionary message’ to the church at Rome are considered. Section three comprises essays on the Spirit as the governing dynamic, the glory of God as the apostle’s missionary goal, and the importance of Paul’s Christology in shaping his mission to the Gentiles. Finally, part four addresses Paul’s missionary praxis, including his support of his missionary enterprise.

Religion in Communist Lands journal now on-line

I am pleased to announce that the journal Religion in Communist Lands is now available on-line here. Although its subject matter might be considered peripheral to Biblical Studies it represents a unique archive of an important period in modern church history which will be of great interest to many. The articles will later be listed on my missiology website when time and resources become available to proceed with its development. I am grateful to the Trustees of the Keston Institute for their enthusiasm to see this journal and its successor Religion, State and Society placed on-line for free public access.

New Missiology Gateway Coming Soon

Tim Davy of Redcliffe College contacted me recently and asked if I had considered developing the two pages on TheologicalStudies.org.uk into a site on Christian Missions. This struck a chord with what I had been thinking for some time - that I was hardly doing justice to this vast and important subject. After putting the idea to a member of staff at All Nations Christian College - who was also extremely enthusiastic - I decided to register the domain http://www.missiology.org.uk/

I have drafted a structure (below) so that you can see what subjects the site might eventually host bibliographies and resources on:

Theology
- Old Testament
- New Testament
- Contemporary, etc.

History of Missions
- Early
- Medieval
- Modern

Mission Skills
- Bible Translation [I would like help from Wycliffe Bibloe Translators on this section]
- Cross-Cultural Evangelism
- Culture Shock
- Family
- Finance & Support
- Health
- Spiritual Life (incl. Prayer)
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language
- "Tentmaking", etc.

Countries [Eventually covering most countries]
- Africa
- Asia
- Europe
- North America
- South America
- Oceania

Religions
- Animism
- Buddhism
- Hinduism
- Islam, etc.

People
- William Carey
- Adoniram Judson, etc.

I am looking for Colleges, organisations and interested individuals who are prepared to partner with me, Redcliffe College and All Nations in creating this new Gateway initially by providing bibliographies on their own areas of interest and expertise. In order to do so effectively I have created a Facebook group called Missiology.org.uk Working Group for those wishing to help. To join please send me an e-mail to rob(at)biblicalstudies.org.uk - (remember to substitute a '@').

I hope to have the site running by the beginning of the next academic year.
