Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Nils Diaz is retiring. He was appointed to the NRC in 1996 and became chairman in 2003. At his last appearance before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, some senators encouraged him to consider staying in the field as a consultant. Chairman Diaz is retiring to Florida. Before his appointment, Dr. Diaz was Professor of Nuclear Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida. Dr. Diaz spent 11 years as Director of INSPI for the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization/Department of Defense. Dr. Diaz holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Nuclear Engineering Sciences from the University of Florida, and a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Villanova. He was licensed as a Senior Reactor Operator for 12 years by the NRC.
